A Collaborative User-Centered Approach to Fine-Tune Geospatial Database Design

چکیده
The Geographical Information System (GIS) design process usually involves experts in specific application domains (e.g. geology and forestry). These experts are responsible for capturing user needs, and communicating them to GIS developers. However, as the community of users is not directly involved in the design process, these experts may miss some user intentions. This may lead to ill-defined requirements and ultimately in higher risks of geospatial data misuse. In this paper, we present a collaborative user-centered approach in the design process that aims at improving requirements collection and description through a web 2.0 philosophy of having a more active involvement of users. The approach consists of 1) analyzing the role users could play based on requirement engineering guidelines, and 2) allowing users to iteratively describe their intentions of data usage in given contexts.

Revisiting the Concept of Risk Analysis within the Context of Geospatial Database Design: A Collaborative Framework
The aim of this research is to design a collaborative framework that integrates risk analysis activities into the geospatial database design (GDD) process. Risk analysis is rarely undertaken iteratively as part of the present GDD methods in conformance to requirement engineering (RE) guidelines and risk standards. Accordingly, when risk analysis is performed during the GDD, some foreseeable ris...

Recent updates in Google Earth, which provide the possibility to couple cartographic animation with real-time information dissemination, make this software suitable for environmental researchers who work with spatio-temporal data and participate on distributed research projects. Even though it seems simple, computer supported group work with geospatial information at a distance requires a caref...
متن کاملBehavioral Considerations in Developing Web Information Systems: User-centered Design Agenda
The current paper explores designing a web information retrieval system regarding the searching behavior of users in real and everyday life. Designing an information system that is closely linked to human behavior is equally important for providers and the end users. From an Information Science point of view, four approaches in designing information retrieval systems were identified as system-...
متن کاملCase study: Redesigning a Kansei Engineering Designed Scissors by User Centered Design Approach
This paper is based on the research which was conducted earlier on Kansei Engineering (KE) and resulted in a new concept for scissors to redesign it with another method called “User Centered Design” (UCD). This is a shift from translation of the consumers’ psychological feeling about a product related to their perception of the design (KE) to focus on designing for and involving users in the de...

Purpose – Information commons were introduced into libraries in the early 1990s. Now universities are building library learning commons and campus learning spaces. This paper sets out to present a participatory library (re)design approach for collaborative planning “for and with” faculty teachers, student learners, and campus stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach – Collaborative design (co-...
